An Introduction to Contemplative Prayer

The prayer life most of us are accustomed to consists of morning and evening prayers, prayer before meals, the Rosary, some other devotional prayers and meditation on Scripture or some spiritual writings. Since these prayers help us to relate to God they are very helpful. Having found us faithful to such prayers, now God calls us to a far deeper prayer life, namely contemplative prayer. Contemplative prayer leads us to a deeper intimacy with the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. It is falling in love with the Most Holy Trinity.

As each one of us grew to mental and physical maturity gradually- 9 months in womb, several months as infant and child, more years as teenager and young adult, then only comes middle age and maturity, so also coming to spiritual maturity- deeper relationship with God- needs gradual and steady growth. The principal aim of the Contemplative Prayer Sessions which we planned for the next few months is this one.

It is to be noted that Contemplative Prayer is not something beyond our capacity. It is not meant for some religious men and women. Note the following Scriptures:
"Learn to savor how good the Lord is" (Ps.34:9); "One thing I ask of the Lord, this I seek: to dwell in the Lord’s house all the days of my life, to gaze on the Lord’s beauty" (Ps. 27:4)

Since the Sacred Scripture is written for people in all walks of life, all of these Contemplative texts express the goal for all of us, beginners as well as the advanced.
